Transform Your Life In A Painless Way

Transform Your Life In A Painless Way

Founder-Ācārya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

Radhadesh Retreat Day 4, Verses 4-5-6 –  Given By His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami – ISKCON Radhadesh, Belgium on 4 August 2011.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami:

na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ
kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye
mama janmani janmanīśvare
bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi

na dhanaḿna means ‘not’ or ‘no’ and dhanaḿ means ‘wealth’;na janaḿ means ‘no desire for followers’; na sundarīḿsundarīḿ means ‘beautiful woman’; kavitāḿkavitā means ‘the fruitive- the desire for fruitive activities which has been so wonderfully described in such flowery languages in Vedic scriptures’’; In another words kavitā means ‘beautiful poetry’  kavitā  means ‘poetry’ kavitā means ‘flowery words especially the flowery words which describe the benefit of material enjoyment following the karmaṇḍa section of the Vedas’. Now He is rejecting all that na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa. jagad-īśa jagad means ‘the world’ and īśa means ‘the controller’; so who is the supreme controller? Who is the supreme proprietor? Kṛṣṇa. So He is praying to Kṛṣṇa, “Kṛṣṇa I don’t want all these; I don’t want wealth; I don’t want name and fame; I don’t want followers; I don’t want association of beautiful women; I do not want to be involved in the karma-kāṇḍa section of the Vedas to enjoy in the material world; jagad-īśa kāmaye but what is my desire then? These are the things I do not want but then obviously there has to be something that I want. What is that I want? mama janmani janmanīśvare, janmani janmanīśvare means ‘life after life my Lord’;  bhavatād  bhaktir  ahaitukī tvayi, bhavatād means ‘yours’; bhakti means ‘devotional service’; ahaitukī means unconditional. All I want is Your unconditional loving devotional service. So what will happen if you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra?

Yes, your material life will be finished. There is a beautiful discussion about that. That if you are still interested in enjoying the material nature with your family and friends, then please don’t go near the Kesighat where that dark little boy is playing His flute, standing there with His body bending in three parts, in three bending form, tribhaga sundara, don’t go near Him because if you go near Him, your material life will be finished. So are you still interested in material life? Very good. Then chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare. So Please recite after me. Now this time what I will do is: I will say it once and I will ask you to say the line three times.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: na dhanaḿ

Devotees: na dhanaḿ, na dhanaḿ, na dhanaḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: na janaḿ

Devotees: na janaḿ, na janaḿ, na janaḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ

Devotees: na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ, na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ
, na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay, yeah, go ahead, say. Okay very good. How many of you can now recite this line without looking at the book? Okay Kevin.

Kevin prabhu: na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami:Okay everyone.

Devotees: na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. Very good. I am very impressed with your enthusiasm [laughter].

Devotees: [laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: kavitāḿ vā

Devotees: kavitāḿ vā, kavitāḿ vā, kavitāḿ vā

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: jagad-īśa kāmaye

Devotees: jagad-īśa kāmaye, jagad-īśa kāmaye, jagad-īśa kāmaye

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye

Devotees: kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye, kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye, kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay how many of you can now say this line now? Okay Mukesh.

Mukesh prabhu: kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami:Very good. Now how many of you remember the first line? Okay. Pujarini.

Pujarini mātājī: na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay second line.

Pujarini mātājī: kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. Do you know the third line also [laughter].

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: mama janmani

Devotees: mama janmani, mama janmani, mama janmani

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: mama janmani janmanīśvare

Devotees: mama janmani janmanīśvare, mama janmani janmanīśvare, mama janmani janmanīśvare

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Don’t look at the book. How many of you can say it now? Okay.

Some devotee: mama janmani janmanīśvare

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. Then the fourth line is bhavatād bhaktir

Devotees: bhavatād bhaktir, bhavatād bhaktir, bhavatād bhaktir

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: ahaitukī tvayi

Devotees: ahaitukī tvayi, ahaitukī tvayi, ahaitukī tvayi

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi

Devotees: bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi, bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi, bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: So the principle of memorizing, the method for memorizing is repetition. You repeat and you will see it sticks to your mind. Just you know three times and you will see. Now you have almost got it. You have got almost all the lines, isn’t it? All of you? Now the next point is, the next point is to try to remember the first word of each line. What is the first word of first line, how many of you can remember? Okay Risikanta.

Risikanta prabhu: na

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: na. Okay do you get the rest of the line.

Risikanta prabhu: [inaudible]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami:Okay what is the first word of the second line? Okay Nimesh.

Nimesh prabhu: [inaudible]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yeah so can you recite rest of the line.

Nimesh prabhu: [inaudible]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye. So it comes automatically, doesn’t it? Na, you just got the word na to begin with na dhanaḿ na janaḿ na sundarīḿ. It is leading you to the next line. What is the next line? kavitāḿ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye. Then what is the first word of the third line? Mama and the rest of the line

Devotees: mama janmani janmanīśvare.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: mama janmani janmanīśvare. And what is the first word of the fourth line? bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi. It’s like a thread. Just connects. Try to use this principle and you will see very easily you will be able to memorize the verses. Everything needs a systematic effort. So this is how we do the- we make the systematic effort. The first thing is actually to understand the meaning of the verse. That you do on your own. Read the verse and that’s what we did at the beginning. Na means? Dhanam means? Janam means? Sundarīṁ means? Kavitāṁ? Jagad īśa? Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa. Kāmaye? I desire. Mama? Janmani? Janmanīśvare? Janmani janmani means life after life. Īśvare? Unto the Lord. Bhavatād bhaktir? Bhavatād means, bhavatād means your; very good. Bhaktir means ahaitukī means tvayi means unto you. So you got all the words’ meanings. Okay now you repeat with the understanding of the words. Just repeat a few times and you will almost get it. Then what is the next step? You write them down on a piece of paper. You write the verse down on a piece of paper and then during the day in course of your chores, you try to memorize it from time to time. You try to see if you can remember and if you get stuck then pull out the paper and just see where you got stuck. In this way you practice a little bit and you will be able to memorize the verses. To memorize one verse a day is not that difficult. But then what needs after that? Is repetition, from time to time you read the verses, then you will see it will be easy. Prabhupāda wanted us to memorize Sanskrit verses for various reasons. One is: when you memorize the verse then we understand it, the theme, the point that is made through the verse. If we memorize the verse then we can systematically project our focus our subject… Like while preaching it helps us to decide what to say, what to, how to preach. Also when you repeat the verse, the people those who hear become impressed. They see that you are not just saying something of your hat. You are saying something which has a solid substance. And I have seen that it is very impressive when devotees recite verses, quote verses and speak. I remember when I first came to the temple and joined the temple, I heard these American devotees quoting Bhagavad-gītā verses and speaking it was so impressive and it seemed that as if they memorized the entire Bhagavad-gītā. It is so impressive the Americans quoting Sanskrit verses. After all our main business is preaching? What is preaching? First we accept, then we speak. Preaching means giving it to others but in order to give it to others first you have to have it yourself. Therefore this assimilation is very important which is called apnana ‘to make it your own’. The knowledge is there in the books but if the knowledge is in the books then it is not. In Sanskrit there is a saying pustakasthatu ya vidhya, para hast gatam dhanam kaaryakaale samutpanne naa tad vidhya na tad dhanam, ‘the knowledge that is there in the book and the money that is in somebody else’s pocket doesn’t have any value’. At the time of necessity that knowledge or that money will not be of any use. So try to make an effort, make a little effort, you are so intelligent people you will be able to very easily memorize the verses and this will also make you very fixed up in your spiritual life because these words are not ordinary words, these are the words from the spiritual sky; these are words from Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s lotus lips. O almighty Lord,

Devotees: O almighty Lord,

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: I have no desire to accumulate wealth,

Devotees: I have no desire to accumulate wealth

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: nor do I desire beautiful women

Devotes: nor do I desire beautiful women

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: nor do I want any number of followers.

Devotees: nor do I want any number of followers

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami:I only want Your causeless devotional service,

Devotees: I only want Your causeless devotional service

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: birth after birth.

Devotees: birth after birth

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Isn’t it beautiful? So if we want to become free from material attachments, why is it important to become free from material attachments? Yes. The thing is if you want to go back to the spiritual world then is it desirable to have attachment to the material world. Like if your feet are tied up, will you be able to progress? No. So if your feet are tied up to stuck to the material nature will you be able to go to the spiritual world? Another example is: if you have two feet on two different boats will you be able to progress? So better you decide where you want to be. If you want to be in material nature then don’t chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Sounds shocking? Yes, because chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra will destroy your material life. Again is it shocking? No I won’t say destroy. Actually it prepares you for spiritual life. Your life doesn’t change as such. It is not that you have to give up your family; you have to give up your house; did anybody have to give up your house or family? Did Prabhupāda ever say that? No, Prabhupāda told some of us to do that but not to all of us. Prabhupāda told us; Prabhupāda told me not to get entangled in the material life and that was necessary and we were single at that time, didn’t have any; we were useless; materially we have been useless. So Prabhupāda said okay spiritually you become useful. That the point is: Although we are materially situated ultimately we have to be prepared to free ourselves from all material entanglements but there is a way of doing it. There is a painless way of doing it. If you do it inexpertly then it will be very painful like, when an expert surgeon operates on you, do you feel any pain? Because he knows the expert surgeon knows how to operate, how to treat you but it is only a quack who will mess everything up and cause you pain. So a pure devotee of the Lord, he is an expert like an expert physician and he cures the disease in a very simple and very wonderful way. And what is the wonderful way? The wonderful way is: that you just transfer, transform everything from material to spiritual, which is the meaning of sakīrtana: use everything in Kṛṣṇa’s service. See you are not rejecting the objects you are simply changing your attitude. Changing your attitude is: you remain in the situation that you are in but instead of putting yourself in the centre put Kṛṣṇa in the centre. All you have to do is: just put Kṛṣṇa in the centre and when you do that what happens? Then it becomes spiritualized. So that is mama janmani janmanīśvare bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi. Pure devotional service is a process of serving Kṛṣṇa. Now to serve you have to be engaged, you have to be in; you have to have so many different things to please the Lord. So it is not a matter of rejecting anything but rather positively utilizing everything.

Like in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness- to simplify that point, to make the point clear, I will give you an example. Prabhupāda said the difference between Māyāvādī and us is: when somebody gives money to the Māyāvādī, Māyāvādī puts his hand in the back and says no no I don’t touch money, I don’t touch money, but when somebody gives us money we take it with our right hand and stretch our left hand for some more. So that’s the difference. We are not saying no. our business is not to say no; our business is to say  yes for Kṛṣṇa. The no, only no for our sense gratification but everything for Kṛṣṇa’s pleasure. Risikesa risikena sevana bhaktir ucyate. with the senses to serve the Lord of the senses is called Bhakti. What is the definition of Bhakti? The definition of Bhakti is: to serve Kṛṣṇa who is the Lord of all senses with your senses. So there is no question of rejecting the activities of the senses but using the senses in serving Kṛṣṇa. So this is the most sublime process that Caitanya Mahāprabhu has given in the form of sakīrtana.

ayi nanda-tanuja kińkaraḿ
́ māḿ viṣame bhavāmbudhau
kṛpayā tava pāda-pańkaja-
sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaḿ vicintaya

The 5th verse ayi nanda-tanuja, ayi is indicating ‘O my Lord’. Nanda-tanuja, nanda means ‘Nanda Mahārāja’; tanuja means ‘son’. Who is the son of Nanda Mahārāja? So addressing Kṛṣṇa, Oh Kṛṣṇa, Son of Nanda Mahārāja; kikara, kikara means? Servant. Very good. Patita mām, patita means ‘fallen’ mām means me. Very good. Viṣame? Very good. ‘Terrible, dangerous’; bhavāmbudhau, it’s is a combination of two words bhava and ambudhau. ambudhau means ‘ocean’ and bhava means ‘material’, ‘material world’, ‘the ocean of material world’; kpayā ‘mercifully’; tava pāda-pakaja ‘lotus feet’;. Sthita dhūli, sthita means ‘situated’ dhūli ‘speck of dust’, dust’ sadśa? Very good [laughter]. Sadśa means ‘like’; vicintaya? Yes Pujarini you are dictating us [laughter]. what is the vicintayavicintaya means ‘please consider’, right? Pujarini and Mukesh are dictating us. Very good scholars. So should we recite this verse? ayi nanda-tanuja kińkaraḿ

Devotees: ayi nanda-tanuja kińkaraḿ

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: patitá māḿ viṣame bhavāmbudhau

Devotees: patitá māḿ viṣame bhavāmbudhau

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: kṛpayā tava pāda-pańkaja

Devotees: kṛpayā tava pāda-pańkaja-

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaḿ vicintaya

Devotees: sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaḿ vicintaya

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. So you all try to memorize yourselves. I just told you about the method of doing it and you do it, you try to do it yourselves. We did word for word meaning we did. Now let’s read the translation

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: O son of Mahārāja Nanda (Kṛṣṇa),

Devotees: O son of Mahārāja Nanda (Kṛṣṇa),

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: I am Your eternal servitor

Devotees: I am Your eternal servitor

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: yet somehow or other

Devotees: yet somehow or other

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: I have fallen into this horrible ocean of birth and death.

Devotees: I have fallen into this horrible ocean of birth and death.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Please pick me up from this ocean of death and place me

Devotees: Please pick me up from this ocean of death and place me

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: as one of the atoms at Your lotus feet.

Devotees: as one of the atoms at Your lotus feet.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: So this is how the effect of chanting of the holy name is gradually being revealed. So when we take to devotional service then which attitude do we develop? We lose interest for material enjoyment. This dhanam, janam, sundarī are symbolic to material enjoyment. Why dhanam is symbolic? What is dhanam what is wealth, anybody? Can anybody define what is wealth? Wealth?

Devotee: [inaudible]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami:Yes it is, but what is actually wealth? Wealth is actually the means for sense gratification, the means for sense gratification. If you have wealth you can have sense gratification. Wealth itself is gratifying the senses. And when you have wealth then you can have whatever you want. What is sense gratification? What is sense gratification? Sense the word itself is saying sense gratification, gratify, satisfy the senses. So senses have their demands. Senses are asking give me this, give me that. And to gratify that, to fulfill that demand of senses is sense gratification. I want this. Okay take it. I am happy. I want that. I can’t have it. I am unhappy. Is it happiness? It is just a matter of getting of whatever we want. And misery or distress is not get what we want [laughter]. So dhanam wealth is the facility or the means with which we can get what we want. You have money, you go to a shop, you see something that is attractive or you saw somebody driving a nice car. You say wow! “A new model came up.” You have the money; what do you do? You phone the company and ask, “How much is it?” And they say, “Okay, that’s so much”. “Okay fine send me one. I am sending you the cheque.” Isn’t that what wealth actually is, Dhanam? Janam, the followers; followers glorify you. Gives you the confidence that I have so much power. So this janam is the power or distinction, adoration and profit; distinction and adoration; I am famous because so many people are following me; so many people are glorifying me that kind of boosts our false ego. Material existence means the matter of boosting your false ego. Dhanam, janam and sundarīSundarī, this is the very essence of materialistic life is attraction for opposite sex. Men are attracted towards women and women are attracted towards men. Men are attracted for the beauty of women and women are attracted to the manliness of men, like, their strength, their fame, their wealth [laughter] and the physical make up is also like that. By nature men and women have been made in that way. The natural attraction is there for each other. So that is the very basis of material existence. But when one develops his attachment to Kṛṣṇa then he loses that tendency. Generally this is also sense gratification. Materialistic way of life means a life of sense gratification and the sense gratification are synonymous to these activities: accumulation of wealth, having large number of followers and attraction for beautiful women. These are natural. Especially as I was saying the attraction for opposite sex but actually where is the real attraction? The real attraction is to all attractive, right? And who is all attractive, that why the name Kṛṣṇa is so important. We are attracted to something or somebody but the real source of attraction is actually Kṛṣṇa because He is all attractive. It’s only a matter of getting exposed to Him. Naturally a jīva, a living entity is attracted to Kṛṣṇa but the trouble starts when the living entity is separated from Kṛṣṇa. When a living entity is separated from Kṛṣṇa then he develops these things, attraction for dhanam, janam, sundarī. But when one becomes properly situated then he develops his attraction for Kṛṣṇa and as a result of that he loses his attraction for everything else. So then from that when one develops his genuine interest in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, a genuine taste for rendering devotional service to Kṛṣṇa then what happens? Then he begins to see his situation in material nature ayi nanda-tanuja kińkaraḿ patitá māḿ viṣame bhavāmbudhau. patitá māḿ viṣame bhavāmbudhau I have fallen in this dangerous ocean of material existence. Can you imagine how many of you do not know how to swim? Okay, how many of you know how to swim? Okay you all are very expert swimmers but somehow or other if you fall in the middle of the ocean, what will be, no matter how good a swimmer you are, for how long you will be able to stay afloat? Consider there is a ship wreck and you are in the middle of the ocean what will be your situation? At that time what will you want? At that time what would be your only craving, only desire, only want that somehow somebody comes and rescue you, because on your own you won’t be able to swim across the ocean. So that is how He is praying. ayi nanda-tanuja kińkaraḿ patitá māḿ viṣame bhavāmbudhau. O son of Mahārāja Nanda (Kṛṣṇa), I am Your eternal servant, yet somehow or other I have fallen in this dangerous ocean of material existence, this horrible ocean of birth and death. Actually this birth and death is synonymous to our falling in the ocean of material nature, bhava sagara, bhavāmbudhau. So at that time what would be your prayer? Please pick me up because You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead; You can do anything; You are omnipotent ;You are omnipresent; You are omniscient; that’s why these three aspects of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are very, very important to remember. You are omnipresent rather first You are Omniscient, You know everything so You know my situation. What is my situation You know? You are omnipresent, so You are there. You are omnipotent You are all powerful therefore you can do it. Although I cannot swim across this material nature, I am drowning but You can rescue me. And how to rescue me? Just pick me up and place me at Your louts feet, that’s all You have to do because that is the situation where I- that is the situation that is my constitutional position. Then when one develops one’s relationship with Kṛṣṇa in this way, becomes a speck of dust at Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet being delivered from the material existence then what happens to him?

nayanaḿ galad-aśru-dhārayā
́ gadgada-ruddhayā girā
pulakair nicita
́ vapụ kadā
tava nāma-grahaṇe bhaviṣyat

Nayanam galadaaśrudhārāya, ‘tears will flow from my eyes’ nayanam means? Nayanam means ‘eyes’; galadaśrudhārāya ‘flow of tears’; vadanavadana means? ‘Voice, mouth’; gadgada ‘when my voice will become choked’; rudhayagirāvadana gadgadarudhaya-gira, my voice will be choked. pulakair nicitá vapụ kadā ‘when the hairs will stand on end in my body; tava nāmagrahae  bhaviyati. This bhaviyati is in future tense. Tava nāmagrahāne by chanting your name will happen. When will these things happen by chanting Your name? What will happen? Tears will come streaming down my eyes, my voice will be choked and the hairs will stand on end in ecstasy. When will it happen? When will it happen? So these is again Caitanya Mahāprabhu is expressing his humble disposition as if He didn’t get it but actually we have to understand Caitanya Mahāprabhu is speaking like that as if He is speaking on our behalf. So I will go into some questions and answers now. Does anybody have any question? Yes Mukesh.

Mukesh prabhu: [inaudible]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay, very good question. That now that I am in household life and I have natural attachment for my wife and children, so how do I deal with that attachment? The thing is that you don’t have to artificially renounce it, right? Like whatever is your āśrama remain situated in that āśrama. Say now that you are a householder, so that is your āśrama, remain situated in that āśrama but spiritualize your situation. What is the difference between material and spiritual, do you know? Very good. When you put Kṛṣṇa in the centre, that is spiritual and what constitutes material? When you put yourself in the centre. When you put yourself in the centre that is material; when you put Kṛṣṇa is in the centre that is spiritual, right? So there is a house, there is a family, there are family members, now who is the centre of all that? At the moment, very honest statement [laughter], at the moment it is me. Mukesh is admitting. Okay, now try to put Kṛṣṇa in the centre. Whose house it is? Very good [laughter]. And in order to make it Kṛṣṇa’s house you have to have room for Kṛṣṇa, make it into Kṛṣṇa’s temple and then what will happen? You will literally feel that it is Kṛṣṇa’s house. After all everything belongs to Kṛṣṇa, isn’t it? Then you have your wife. Is she your wife or Kṛṣṇa’s maid servant?

Mukesh prabhu: Kṛṣṇa’s maid servant.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay so what happened [laughter]. So relationship now becomes spiritualized. You are not taking care of your wife; you are taking care of Kṛṣṇa’s maid servant who is so nicely serving Kṛṣṇa, right? Your children- whose children are they?

Mukesh prabhu: Kṛṣṇa’s children.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Wonderful [laughter].

Devotees: [laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: So take care of them nicely that Kṛṣṇa has put them in your custody. Kṛṣṇa has given you the responsibility to take care of His child. So how you are going to take care of him?

Mukesh prabhu: Very nicely.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very nicely. So in this way being in household life you can spiritualize your situation.

Mukesh prabhu:Thank you. Thank you very much Mahārāja, very, very clearly explained. Hare Kṛṣṇa.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. Thank you. Yes Pujarini.

Pujarini Mātājī: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja. Thank you for the classes this morning, very, very nice. I have one request and one question please.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay.

Pujarini mātājī: The request is: yesterday you were saying this verse written by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī “tuṇḍe tāṇḍavinī

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: vitanute

Pujarini mātājī: vitanute, if you could please just recite that and explain it if you have time and my question is with this verse number six where the symptoms are described. I just wanted to know that whether these symptoms appear in the order that Caitanya Mahāprabhu has said. Is there any significance to Him saying nayanam galad-aśru-dhārayā and then vadana gadgada-rudha-giraya. Does that mean that these symptoms appear in this order as one progresses or advances spiritually or?

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yeah, okay, very good. You see these are the ecstatic symptoms. Now when the ecstasy is experienced, then the symptoms automatically become manifest, right? And when will that ecstasy be experienced? The ecstasy will be experienced when we are chanting the pure name of the Lord. So it’s a matter of chanting- so actually what He is asking when will I be able to chant the pure name? So as a result of the chanting of the pure name, one will experience the loving relationship with Kṛṣṇa, prema. You see prema and nāma are interlinked. Pure name will give prema. So indirectly what he is saying when I will get Kṛṣṇa prema. And because of that experiencing Kṛṣṇa prema, these symptoms will become manifest. Is that point clear?

Devotee: Yes

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. About tuṇḍe tāṇḍavinī some other time we have only five minutes for question answers so let’s stick to that. Yes Kṛṣṇa Govinda.

Kṛṣṇa Govinda prabhu: Thank you very much for the class Mahārāja. You mentioned about the verse that mentions Lord Caitanya disallowing followers but Śrīla Prabhupāda actually sacrificed his life by accepting many, many disciples and his disciples also accepting many followers for the purpose of preaching Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. So is it not important for this Kṛṣṇa Consciousness movement to carry on to take on many followers. I understand Lord Caitanya has mentioned that on the basis of humility it is a way to avoid recognition one should not actually take on more disciples or followers to help preach Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, here again you see they are not talking about followers in the form of disciples. It’s a mundane consideration of followers. Like okay I will become a big political leader or I will become a king, right? So that is the consideration but when it is a spiritual consideration then there is no harm. Like for the sake of spreading Kṛṣṇa Consciousness yes we are going to preach. For the sake of spreading Kṛṣṇa Consciousness like Prabhupāda said we take the money with the right hand and stretch our left hand for more [laughter]. So that is our attitude or rather Prabhupāda’s movement is spiritualized. That is for the sake of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, for the sake of spreading Kṛṣṇa Consciousness we are prepared to do anything.

Devotee: Thank you Mahārāja.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Like there are so many. Like Iskcon is full of dhanamjanam, and sundarims [laughter]. So we are not saying, Prabhupāda is not saying na dhanam na janam in that sense rather he is saying let everybody come to Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.; let everybody and everything be used for Kṛṣṇa in spreading Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. We want not only few janam, we want the entire world, every town and village that is our goal.

Kṛṣṇa Gopal prabhu: Just one further.. when you mentioned that you want to give up wealth, women and everything

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: not for our sake.

Kṛṣṇa Gopal prabhu: not for our sake but for Kṛṣṇa’s sake but certainly there are many devotees in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness specifically congregation devotees have nice businesses who actually donate so much money towards the temple.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay how much money you have in the bank?

Kṛṣṇa Gopal prabhu: It’s my wife’s account.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: [laughter]

Devotees: [laughter].

Devotee: I have some.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. Anyway the point is everything is for Kṛṣṇa, ida kṛṣṇāya na mama. The life should be sacrificed. Sacrificed means this is for Kṛṣṇa not for myself. That is the real mantra of sacrifice. Okay

Kṛṣṇa Gopal prabhu: Thank you so much Mahārāja.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Hare Kṛṣṇa. Yes Sahil.

Sahil prabhu: Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja. I have a question about verses four and five. I don’t understand because Mahāprabhu is in four He is asking for pure devotional service birth after birth and nothing else but then in verse five He asked for being picked up from this ocean of material birth and death. From the mundane point of view that seems like a lower, like lower… please explain that.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, very good point, very good point. See the fourth verse is describing the attitude. And the fifth verse is more like describing the situation that this is my situation. So please save me from this situation and then when I am safe from this situation then only I can, I can properly render devotional service unto you. You get the point I am in this dangerous situation, what is the way out of that situation? Devotional service to Kṛṣṇa. So please save me so that I can become engaged in devotional service.

Devotee: So it’s okay to pray to be delivered from the material world

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes.

Sahil prabhu: Or should we pray that

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes

Sahil prabhu: [indistinct]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, rather prayer to be delivered from the material condition in order to become situated in spiritual position, in constitutional position. From an abnormal situation please allow me to be situated in my normal position. Okay. Thank you. Any other question? Okay, yes Annanya. Take the mike.

Annanya prabhu: Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja. It’s just a comment. Somehow I have fallen in this horrible ocean of birth and death please pick me up from this ocean of death and please place me at Your lotus feet. So many people have this question every time they ask like how have we fallen in this ocean of material world and so, I mean, you are stressing that it’s not important that we have fallen but it’s more important to stress at this point to pray that if we have fallen remove me from this ocean.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Different people have fallen in different way. Somebody fell because there was a plane crash. Somebody fell because of somebody is in that situation because there was a ship wreck. You know [laughter] don’t worry about it, how you fell in the middle of the ocean because that’s not going to help you. What’s going to help you is how you are going to get out of that situation.

Sahil prabhu: Yes, I was saying that Mahārāja, I mean that we don’t have to worry we just have to..

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, right, exactly right. I am reiterating your point that why waste time?

Sahil prabhu: Yeah Mahārāja.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: how we fell. Actually there are some people they are just wasting time figuring out but Prabhupāda emphatically pointed out don’t waste your time because you will never be able to figure out because the cause of your fall down is not here; the cause of your fall down is in the spiritual context. So only when you go back to spiritual sky then you can understand the cause of your fall down.

Sahil prabhu: There is also one of the examples which I heard in one of the classes it is said if there is fire is in the hose you don’t waste time finding out how the fire set in, you just run out.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Let the interest company figure that out [laughter]

Sahil prabhu: [laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: you just try to extinguish the fire or escape from that if you are trapped in the middle of the fire.

Sahil prabhu: Thank you Mahārāja

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Thank you. Hare Kṛṣṇa. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda. Gaura premānande Hari Hari bol
